The unexpected results of hiring a coach (and how it’s the MOST important part to creating what you want)
It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of coaching. And even AS a coach, I’ve invested in many coaches over the course of my entrepreneurial journey, each playing to different strengths depending on what I was needing most at the time.
But I’ll be honest when I say that there were times when money was tight or the timing wasn’t always perfect, but I’ve never regretted the investment.
In fact, I’ve seen a $2k investment in coaching come back to me in the form of a $10k project contract almost immediately.
But it isn’t all about the money either—you bring that growth and personal development with you moving forward and it trickles into all aspects of your life and business. You grow, expand, and build on the previous lessons. You build momentum in your life and business and you start seeing it pay off in BIG ways.
For example, I’ve completely transformed the way I show up in my marketing—getting more work done in far less time as a result of shifting my mindset around content creation, batching similar tasks, and what it means to be more visible on multiple platforms. And I’ve seen results because of it, having more time for longer runs in the morning and time to hang with my man in the evening.
So today, let’s dive into the unexpected results of hiring a coach and how it’s the MOST important part to creating what you want EVEN IF you don’t think you’re quite ready for one yet.
You no longer have to go at it alone
I was first introduced to the world of coaching when I decided to hire my own. It was at a point where I had been spinning my wheels, trying to refine my branding and design website and was having trouble honing in on my ideal client, my secret sauce, and clearly communicating what it was that made my work distinct. It was time to ask for help.
I signed on with an incredible content coach and my business was changed for the better. She helped me to identify my core ideas, lay the foundation of my content strategy, and refine my website copy in a way that felt good to me.
As you know, entrepreneurship can feel like an island of one at times, spending a lot of time in your own head, comparing yourself to others, wondering why you aren’t “there" yet. I found solace in being able to talk to someone about ALL of my ideas, refine them, and move forward in a direction that felt good to me.
But what rocked my world more than any of that was that for the first time I didn’t have to have to do it all by myself. And THAT right there is the magic of coaching.
Because as much as I wish I could hand you a one-size-fits-all magic formula to skyrocket your business, I’ve been doing this long enough to know that there simply ISN’T one. It’s about finding what works for you—taking your business, your personality, and your lifestyle into consideration.
And a coach can help you to connect the dots in a way that not only feels good but helps you see RESULTS faster than going at it alone ever would.
A great coach can see your blind spots
I’ve found that entrepreneurs are really good at having ALL the ideas. (Believe me, I’ve been there too.) But when it comes to stepping outside of what’s going on in your own head and moving projects forward in a focused, strategic way, well, that can be a struggle.
Which is yet another thing that I love about coaching. Your coach can see your blind spots. Here’s what I mean:
Think of it like playing any other sport. (The only sport I’ve ever been really into is Syracuse basketball so let’s use basketball as an example.) When you’re IN the game you’re in your head—you’re looking for the best way to get the ball to the hoop, but you’re limited by what you can perceive in the split second before you make a decision to pass the ball, dribble, etc.
Whereas, the coach, can see the bigger picture of what is going on on the court, seeing opportunities or ways to improve.
The same is true in business. Coaches can see the bigger picture because they aren’t as IN IT and they lend a perspective you wouldn’t necessarily realize otherwise. That is worth its weight in GOLD because it can be hard to see exactly when or how to shift what you’re currently doing all on your own.
I’ve had clients who’ve had mental blocks around planning their weeks in advance or scheduling things on their calendar that were commitments to themselves rather than others. I’ve helped them to shift their mindset so they can give the same priority to those personal projects, rather than constantly putting themselves on the back burner, and they’ve completely transformed the way they show up in their life and business as a result.
You’ll bust through that fear and self-doubt and do it ANYWAY
If there’s one thing that holds entrepreneurs back the most it’s self-doubt. That little witch in your head that says you’re not good enough, reminds you that there are so many others doing the same thing, asks where the next paycheck will come from, and causes you to wonder if you’ll ever truly make it.
The list goes on...I’m guessing you’re familiar.
This happened to me recently when I was refining my content strategy for my business. I was honing in on the types of content creation that were feeling really good to me—my thoughts drifted to a few podcast interviews I had enjoyed doing. The little voice in my head reminded me that I’ve always wanted to start a podcast, when out of nowhere the self-doubt started to bubble up.
“That’s so much work. There are so many out there. No one will listen,” that little voice whispered.
It’s exactly these moments when working with a coach can be so valuable because a coach can help you to acknowledge that fear and self-doubt but also ask the question, “WHAT IF YOU DO IT ANYWAY?”
Having someone on your side, who “gets it” but is rooting for you, helping you to move forward and do the things you’ve always wanted to do, can be really powerful stuff.
You’ll see your own values reflected back to you
Looking for a coach can be a little bit like dating. You’re looking for someone who gets it, who gets YOU.
I mean, really think about it. Talking about your life and business, and how they work TOGETHER, can be some personal stuff. So you want to value the opinion of the person by your side, helping you, guiding you, and IN IT with you.
Which is why, as you would in dating, I always suggest making a list of your own values BEFORE hiring a coach. Really hone in on the things that are most important to YOU so you can look for those values reflected back to you in the person you choose.
And the same goes for me too. I love working with women who value growth, mindfulness, and fulfillment. They believe that they can have BOTH a beautiful, balanced life AND a successful, thriving business and are willing to do the mindset work to get them there. Because when we’re both working toward that, AMAZING things happen.
You’ll practice getting the support you need
When entrepreneurs start out, they wear a lot of hats. You become very good at juggling all the things and while that likely got you to where you are today, it also means that you might be TOO good at relying on yourself instead of asking for support when you need it.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Working with a coach taught me not only that I need to learn to ask for support, but I also needed to communicate HOW that coach could support me (because spoiler alert: coaches aren’t mind-readers, even if it feels that way sometimes).
Over time, I’ve noticed that asking for support has trickled into different aspects of my business and had some incredible results. For me this means:
→ Hoping on a call to chat about a new idea that I need to flesh out a bit
→ Seeing some familiar faces in a webinar
→ Asking business besties to share a new launch
→ Requesting an introduction or referral
Because it truly takes a village to grow a business. It’s time to ask for the support you need so you can get those results you want faster and with more ease.
You’ll have the accountability you need to see results quickly
When you hire a coach, you allow your ideas to become bigger than just you. You make space for those ideas to show up in the world in new ways (or to actually see the light of day).
Because while you’re great at taking care of clients and getting work done that you’ve promised OTHERS, those personal projects (the ones that will actually move your business forward) tend to fall to the back burner.
This is why I love that coaching allows me to provide clients with the ACCOUNTABILITY they need to see things through. We develop a schedule that works for them and they get to TEST IT OUT and fine-tune as needed. Because life’s too short to keep saying “someday” to those things you've always wanted to create—that new product, podcast, retreat, mastermind group—THE TIME IS NOW.
